Morrisons has taken a project management-led approach to tackling food waste through a new collaboration with FareShare and Newton, highlighting the importance of operational efficiency in addressing complex supply chain challenges.
The partnership, focusing on reducing surplus food from Morrisons’ manufacturing arm, is a prime example of how cross-functional collaboration and project management expertise can bring meaningful change.
At the heart of the initiative is the Flaxby facility, where Newton worked alongside Morrisons’ engineering and manufacturing teams to identify previously untapped opportunities for food recovery.
By leveraging Newton’s analytical capabilities and problem-solving expertise, the team was able to create an innovative solution that allows surplus vegetables to be recovered for human consumption. The integration of these waste reduction methods into Morrisons’ supply chain has already led to the redistribution of millions of meals.
In November 2023, Morrisons further underscored its commitment to this project by pledging 500,000 meals to the Coronation Food Project, supporting a national effort to alleviate food insecurity.
The initiative has since expanded nationwide, with up to 26 pallets of surplus food now being collected weekly for redistribution, a remarkable achievement in scaling such a project.
With additional expansion planned for other production sites, including those in Surrey and Northamptonshire, the initiative showcases how structured project management can drive large-scale impact, both in reducing waste and providing for communities in need.
