A striking new apartment complex inspired by New York’s iconic Flatiron building has been proposed for the heart of Stockport.
The £6 million development, designed by Altrincham-based property firm 21 Living, would transform a prominent site at the junction of Tiviot Dale and Bridge Street, just steps away from Stockport’s bustling Merseyway shopping centre and the historic Underbanks quarter.
The ambitious project envisions a six-storey structure featuring 33 modern apartments, alongside ground-floor commercial space, which could accommodate a retail unit. Renderings by Ollier Smurthwaite Architects reveal a sleek design that pays homage to the triangular elegance of Manhattan’s Flatiron skyscraper while integrating with the local urban landscape.
Luke Powell, managing director of 21 Living, highlighted the growing demand for high-quality housing in Stockport. “Demand for first-class apartments in Stockport is high, and this scheme will continue the regeneration drive that is gathering pace here,” he said. “Our focus is on delivering high-quality modern living that makes a positive impact on the local community.”
The design also carries nods to Stockport’s heritage, with architectural features intended to evoke the town’s history, including a reference to the long-lost Tiviot Dale Station, once a key railway hub. “This design reintroduces the historic urban grain to this part of Stockport,” said Matt Ollier, director of Ollier Smurthwaite Architects.
The proposal is part of a broader redevelopment wave sweeping Stockport, which has seen major investments in recent years as the town looks to reinvent itself as a vibrant urban centre. 21 Living has also revealed plans for two additional development sites within the area, with planning applications expected to be submitted in the coming weeks.
The proposed complex would not only provide much-needed housing but also contribute to the ongoing transformation of Stockport’s town centre, offering both residents and visitors a blend of modern living and commercial opportunities in a location rich with historical significance.
