Five Good Reasons To Declutter Your PC

Over the years, computers can start to accumulate a lot of digital clutter. This includes forgotten photo albums, old documents and even entire unused programs.

Many of us tend to ignore this digital clutter – unlike physical clutter, no-one else can see it, so why bother tidying it up?

Well, despite not being as visible to others, there can be lots of reasons to still keep on top of this clutter. Here are just a few different reasons to declutter your PC – and how to go about it.

Reason #1: Your PC will run faster

If your PC is running slow, it could be because of all the clutter. Many files and programs use up RAM simply through background processes, causing performance to be reduced. A thorough clean-up could prevent slow loading times and make you more productive.

A slow computer isn’t always due to clutter. For instance, if you’re wondering why is my SQL query running slowly, it could be a manner of issues. Decluttering your PC could just be one way of trying to solve the issue.

Reason #2: You’ll free up more space for necessary files

Less files means more disc space. Getting rid of unnecessary files could allow space for more necessary files. This could allow you to upgrade to more powerful software in some cases.

As well as deleting files, make sure to defrag your computer to free up as much space as possible. Most modern computers automatically do this, but some may not.

Reason #3: You’ll be able to find files more easily

Decluttering your PC could also allow you to find files more easily. Rather than having to scroll through masses of folders and documents, you can easily reach the information you need.

Obviously, a good folder system can help too. While getting rid of clutter, consider also improving your filing system, as well as relocating any misplaced files that you want to keep.  

Reason #4: You’ll feel calmer and more focused

Clutter has been linked to increased stress levels. It can serve as a distraction when trying to focus and can affect our ability to complete tasks efficiently. Even something as simple as having lots of desktop icons can increase anxiety. By cleaning up your computer, you could find that you’re a lot calmer when trying to work from your PC.

Reason #5: You could improve your PCs security

Digital clutter can also pose a security risk. Old unused programs may no receive updates leaving them open to new forms of cyberattack, while old files could contain forgotten sensitive information that is similarly not protected. Make sure to go through your old files and programs and delete anything that isn’t supported.

How to declutter your PC

There are lots of ways in which you can declutter your PC. Here are just several tips for culling the digital clutter.

  •         Start by clearing out your files. Sort folders by date so that you can more easily identify files that you don’t regularly access. Don’t forget to clear out your downloads.
  •         Get rid of software no longer use. A software uninstaller could be useful for identifying and removing programs that you don’t need. This could include some software pre-installed on your PC.
  •         Remove unwanted icons on your desktop. You need only need shortcuts to programs that you use regularly.
  •         Clear out your browsers of junk. Browser extensions and bookmarks can all impact your PC’s speed. Deleting cookies may not be necessary as some of these cookies can actually help sites you regularly visit to load faster.
