How To Understand Your Customer Base

Understanding your customer base is the best way to make a profit in business. When you know exactly who they are, where they come from, and what they want from the market, you can much better cater to them for success. But how do you gather this kind of information together into a useful bank of knowledge to make use of?

Your customer base might be wide and varied – how can you target all of them at the same time? Via clever use of marketing tactics, including market research, and mastering your online presence. So with all that in mind, here’s how to truly understand your customer base and bring them the best value possible as a result.

Realise Why They’re Shopping with You

This is the first step in your journey to knowing who your customers really are. You need to know why they’re coming to you in the first place. It might take a while to come to a conclusion here, but be sure not to discount any potential reason. Any of them could be a big part of why you’ve made a profit so far.

Now this could be something as simple as your flagship product having a very competitive price, but it could also lie in the fact that you have amazing customer service and/or you’re far more convenient than your competitors. Or it could be all three! And this is what you need to lean on in your marketing.

Give Them a Chance to Offer Opinions

Your customers are going to have plenty to say – it’s what they want to say that carries your opportunity to understand them! So give them an opportunity to offer this opinion, above all else. It’s how you’ll get to the root of any problem you might run into.

Send them feedback forms after shopping with you, pull a focus group from among them, and simply just ask via social media what they want to see next. Take their ideas seriously to show you hold respect for them, and then take real effort to carry them out.

Curate Interesting Content for Them

Interesting content is something any customer will respond to more than just a few lines of text in a social media post! But what do we mean by interesting content? Stuff they actually want to read, watch, and listen to! And that isn’t as hard to come up with as you might think.

Which is where things like professional video prodution, starting a podcast, and ensuring a different post goes up everyday comes in. The more varied your content is, the more your audience (and by default, your customer base) will take an interest. Why? Because it’s not the same thing every single day. It’s the simple rule of ‘it’s easy to pay attention when there’s something worth your attention’!

Your customer base shops with you for a reason. So, investigate the ideas above to find out how you can best use this.
