£2 Million Upgrade Project Progresses At Lough Island Reavy Reservoir In County Down

Lough Island Reavy Reservoir

Northern Ireland Water has confirmed that a £2 million improvement project at the Lough Island Reavy Reservoir in Kilcoo, County Down, is progressing on schedule.

The project focuses on replacing the overflow spillway, a critical component for ensuring the reservoir’s safety during heavy rainfall.

The upgrades will also enhance water supply to the Drumaroad and Fofanny Water Treatment Works, which serve customers in County Down and Belfast. Currently, peak demand limits the flow from the reservoir, but the completed upgrades will ensure a steady supply, even during high-demand periods. The work is expected to be finished by March 2025.

Mark Richardson, NI Water’s Senior Project Manager, emphasized the importance of the improvements for reservoir safety and long-term water security.

He stated, “This project is essential not only for maintaining a stable water supply but also for ensuring compliance with reservoir safety legislation.” The project is part of a larger program involving maintenance work at 36 key reservoirs across Northern Ireland.

Key upgrades at the Lough Island Reavy site include the refurbishment of control valves, the installation of drainage systems, repairs to spillway structures, and upgraded monitoring equipment. The work is being managed by AECOM and carried out by BSG.

The improvements will ensure that the reservoir can meet future demand and respond effectively to extreme weather conditions, securing water supply for thousands of residents.
